Tutorial: Abstract Rose

Tutorial written by Crystal

Instructions:
1. First open up Adobe Photoshop CS2. (You can use other versions too.) First click on File >> New to create a new window or CRTL + N.
2. A window should open up. Have the width and height at 500 pixels. Click 'ok' It should look like this: [HERE].
3. Select the colors black as your foreground color and white as your background color. [HERE].
4. Then go to Filter >> Render >> Clouds.
Now you should have something that looks like this. [HERE].
5. Duplicate the image by going to Layers >> Duplicate Layer or
CTRL + J. Now you should have two of the same layer with clouds on them.
6. Next select Layer 1 by clicking on it in the layers panel. If you do not have the layout panel out click on 'F7' on your keyboard.
7. *Then go to Filter >> Distort >> Twirl.
A window should open up like this one: [HERE].
8. Set the twirl angle to 550 degrees. It is best to have an angle degree between 250 and 650. If you have a degree less than that your rose will have little or no petals. If you have a degree that is more than that your rose will have more or to many petals. (You can try other angle degrees but this is what I use for this tutorial.) It should look like this: [HERE].
9. Repeat the step above. Where you see an *. Only this time change the degree to -550.
It should look like this: [HERE].
10. Now chick on Layer 2.
Select the blend mode. For this tutorial, I'm using 'Difference'
If you used 'difference,' you should get the following image: [HERE].
11. Now you should add color to your abstract rose.
So create a new layer and set the blend mode for that layer to 'color'
Select a different color and use the paint bucket to fill it in.
I used color #0076a3. So my rose looks like this: [HERE]
.
12. After that, you should flatten the image.
Go to Layers >> Flatten Image.
Save your image and now you have an abstract rose.
--End Tutorial--

More Examples: Below are a few examples that I made. It tells you which blend mode I used on the second layer.

Example #1 Blend Mode: Lighten [HERE]
Example #2 Blend Mode: Lighten [HERE]
Example #3 Blend Mode: Lighten [HERE]
Example #4 Blend Mode: Difference [HERE]
